“The number of victims who died in Sibolga is approximately 33 people. The large number of fatalities, plus dozens of residents who have not been found, makes the search process a top priority for all SAR teams in the field,” said Head of Public Relations of the North Sumatra Police, Kombes Ferry Walintukan, Friday (28/11).

Ferry admitted that efforts to evacuate victims faced the biggest obstacle, namely access to the location.Severe landslides that occurred on several main roads hampered physical aid routes and personnel mobilization.
“Because we are also trying to penetrate the Sibolga area. Then we have provided assistance, but the only problem is that our assistance is currently stuck in the landslide area towards the Sibolga area,” he said.
Even though access was cut off, rescue operations continued.The joint SAR team from Brimob, Police, Basarnas, TNI, BPBD, volunteers and local residents combed rivers, hillsides and settlements that were buried by landslide material.
“Rubber boats, heavy equipment, and alternative routes through villages are used to reach locations that cannot even be reached by vehicles,” he said.
Rapidly changing weather, strong water currents, and the potential for subsequent landslides are still challenges in the field.Efforts are being made to continue emergency communications using available devices, while logistics routes are being sought through various alternative routes.
“We from the North Sumatra regional police also express our condolences, and we continue to make efforts to evacuate the victims there,” he said.
