The heroic action of Sertu Giman Syahputra, a TNI soldier who served at Koramil 02/Karang Baru, Kodim 0117/
Aceh Tamiang
, is one of the stories that deserves appreciation in the midst of the Sumatran disaster.
In the midst of floodwaters that continued to rise to more than four meters, Giman repeatedly swam against the strong current to save residents who were trapped in Karangbaru District, Aceh Tamiang Regency.Without boats and evacuation equipment, Giman evacuated at least 20 residents, including babies and toddlers.
The incident occurred on November 26.When the flood began to inundate the settlement, Giman had just returned from the village after attending an invitation from the village head. The water continued to rise until evening, making it impossible for him to save his belongings in his own house.

“In the morning the water rose further. I went up first, saved my family. But a neighbor called for help, saying that many of the houses around him had been swept away,” said Giman, recounting the crucial moments in an official statement.
Hearing the news, Giman immediately moved.Together with his wife, he broke down the walls of the trapped residents’ houses using wooden blocks so they could evacuate the residents inside. At the first location, there were eight people, including a two-month-old baby and several toddlers.
The water continued to rise until it reached around 4.5 meters with a fairly fast current. The houses around the location began to be washed away one by one.Without evacuation aids, Giman was confused about how to help other residents who were still trapped.
Until finally, a resident came with tires and life jackets.Armed with minimal equipment, Giman was determined to jump into the water. He swam past submerged electricity poles and cables, then went back and forth evacuating residents one by one.
“At one point there were six people trapped on the corrugated iron. I carried them back and forth using tires. After that, there were eight more people at the other end, including a one month old baby and the elderly,” said Giman when met in Aceh Tamiang, Friday (19/12).
To evacuate the baby, Giman asked residents to find a bucket or basin. The baby was then placed in a container to make it safer when carried across the flood currents. At that time, the zinc where the residents had taken shelter was already swaying and was almost swept away by the current.
Giman admitted that the flood currents were so strong that even evacuation boats could not get close because they were afraid they would be hit by corrugated iron and house debris.Even though he was exhausted and almost fainted, he continued the evacuation.
“I just asked God for help, asked for strength. After that I got up again, up again, back and forth until everyone could be saved,” he said.
It didn’t stop there, the next day Giman again rescued four other residents who were stuck in palm trees due to being swept away by the current, including a TNI member and his child.Using a simple tire raft, he again evacuated the victim to a safe place.
When asked what made him continue to help other residents, even though his own home and family were also in danger, Giman answered: “I don’t have the heart. As a human being, I have a conscience. My family is already in a higher place. So I was determined to help them.”
Even though his house was damaged by the flood, Giman said he was grateful because the residents he helped were safe.
“I feel very happy to see that they are safe. Even though the house was badly damaged, that’s it, it’s called a disaster. The important thing is that people are safe,” said Giman.
