citing a Chinese state news agency report,
Xinhua
, that Beijing has been planning this project for a long time and it was approved in December last year.
This project is estimated to cost around 1.2 trillion yuan (around Rp. 2,832 trillion).
The project spans 30 km (18 miles) of China and India’s vast border, which is disputed territory with tens of thousands of troops stationed across both.
Once the project is completed, the dam will produce up to three times as much energy as the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in central China.
Xinhua
also reported that the project will generate 300 million megawatt hours of electricity annually, as quoted
The Guardian
.
The dam will harness energy from a 2km drop in river levels over a distance of about 50km, as the river winds its way through a U-shaped canyon.
The Yarlung Tsangpo Dam is an important part of China’s policy of moving electricity from west to east, while strengthening control over transboundary rivers.
This project was carried out by the state-owned company Power Construction Corporation of China.Although Chinese authorities stated that the project would not harm downstream countries.
However, until now no feasibility study or environmental impact analysis has been published.
The Tibetan government also criticized this project as having the potential to damage the environment and threaten millions of people.Similar concerns were also expressed by India and Bangladesh.
Both countries see the project as a direct threat, fearing that the flow of water could be blocked or diverted from their territory.
The Yarlung Tsangpo River, known as Siang in Arunachal Pradesh and Brahmaputra in Assam, supports about 130 million Indians.
The river then flows into Bangladesh as the Jamuna River, supporting around 160 million people.
