Chairman of the DPD PDI Perjuangan (
PDIP
) East Java Said Abdullah strongly criticized the discourse on evaluating regional head elections (
Regional elections
) directly which is said to want to be changed to an election mechanism through the DPRD.
According to Said, the discourse on indirect regional elections is reckless, because it has the potential to set back Indonesian democracy.
“Be careful. We have been so advanced, so advanced. Suddenly we are pulled back again,

[resigned],” said Said after holding the Regional Conference (Konferda) and Simultaneous Branch Conference (Konfercab) of East Java PDIP, at the Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya, Sunday (21/12).

According to Said, direct regional elections are part of the process of maturing democracy in Indonesia.
Therefore, he believes that the discourse on returning indirect regional elections needs to be studied in depth so as not to sacrifice the more substantive essence of democracy.
“In fact, we want to progress, our democracy. Are we going to return to procedural democracy or substantive democracy,” he said.
According to Said, the reason for the high political costs in direct regional elections cannot be used as the sole basis for changing the electoral system for finding regional leaders. He actually questioned whether the mechanism for selecting regional heads through the DPRD was really cheaper and free from similar problems.
“I ask you to be careful, study it in depth. The pluses and minuses. Don’t use the term that the democracy we have implemented in direct regional elections is high cost. Is it not high cost through the DPD? The question is. Maybe it’s the same through the DPRD,” said the Chairman of the DPR RI Budget Agency (Banggar).
He reminded that the main problem with democracy lies not in the direct or indirect regional election system, but in the quality of political education provided by parties to the public.

“The thing is how political parties educate voters and the public that money politics is bad for all of our lives,” said Said.
Previously, the General Chair of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar or Cak Imin said that direct regional head elections (pilkada) were not productive and effective.
Cak Imin admitted that his party would evaluate the implementation of direct regional elections which have been running since 2005.
This statement was made by Cak Imin when attending the opening of the East Java PKB Regional Conference (Muswil) in Surabaya, Friday (19/12).
The agenda was attended by PKB administrators from all districts and cities in East Java, a number of regional heads, as well as East Java PWNU structural administrators, including East Java PWNU Chairman Abdul Hakim Mahfudz or Gus Kikin.
“Direct regional elections are not productive and many democratic systems are ineffective, we will evaluate them,” said Cak Imin.
He emphasized that this evaluation was important to carry out as part of efforts to improve the democratic system in Indonesia.According to him, this discourse is not only PKB’s view, but also a common awareness among other political parties.
“Yes, thank God, all parties are aware that there are many general election systems, in unproductive general election packages, direct regional elections are not productive,” he said.
