He informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the liberation of the cities of Krasnoarmeysk and Vovchansk.Krasnoarmeysk is the Russian name for Pokrovsk.
The Defense Ministry also posted a video purportedly showing Russian soldiers raising their country’s flag over Pokrovsk’s central square.
Moscow’s statement increased pressure on Ukraine amid Kyiv’s efforts to gain support from the United States (US) to end the war.
If the claim is true, it will complicate Ukraine’s supply lines.The fall of Pokrovsk also gave Russia a launching point to advance further north and west of Ukraine.
Pokrovsk is a road and rail node in the Donetsk region.The Ukrainian population in the region was around 60 thousand before the war broke out.This city has been the target of intense Russian attacks in recent months.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov fell of the city of Pokrovsk as an important step towards victory.
Last month, Ukraine sent reinforcements, including special forces, to Pokrovsk in an effort to repel a Russian attack.
However, hundreds of Russian troops managed to infiltrate the city.
