A total of 64 people were declared missing after a boat capsized in
Congo
the middle part, according to confirmation by local authorities on Wednesday (19/11).
The river barge sank on Monday (17/11) at the mouth of the Sankuru River, Kasai Province, Congo. The area is known for its strong and turbulent currents, according to local administrator Francois Ahaka.

He also added that efforts to search for victims were still ongoing.
The ship departed from the port of Bena Dibele in Sankuru Province on November 13, bound for the capital, Kinshasa, which is more than 800 kilometers from its departure point, Ahaka said.
Boat capsizing accidents are becoming increasingly common in this central African country. This is because more and more people are abandoning minimal land routes to switch to cheaper wooden ships.
However, these ships were often fragile and unable to support the weight of passengers and their luggage.
On such trips, life jackets are very rare and the boats are usually overloaded or
overloaded
.
Many ships also travel at night, which greatly complicates rescue efforts when accidents occur and means that many bodies often cannot be recovered.
Last September, at least 193 people died in northwestern Congo in two separate ship tragedies.State media at the time said the incident was caused by “improper loading and nighttime navigation.”
