in 2028.
In an executive order signed this week, Trump said he wants to take US citizens to the Moon under NASA’s Artemis program launched during his first term in the White House.

“Landing on the Moon will affirm US leadership in space, prepare for a journey to Mars, and inspire the next generation of US explorers,” the executive order said, reported by AFP.
The order also states that the NASA space agency plans to build “the initial elements of a permanent outpost on the Moon by 2030. In addition, NASA is also said to be deploying nuclear reactors “on the Moon and in orbit”.
The US previously planned to send its citizens to the surface of the Moon in mid-2027 on the Artemis 3 mission. But that plan has been repeatedly postponed.
Industry experts say it is likely that the plan will be postponed again, because the lunar landing vehicle being developed at Elon Musk’s SpaceX is not yet ready.
Trump’s ambition is said to be to surpass China, which also plans to send a crew to the Moon in 2030 and build a base there.
Prioritizing a mission to the Moon is a policy change from what Trump said earlier this year.
Instead of going to the Moon, Trump previously said he wanted to plant the US flag on Mars before the end of his term.
