Police arrested six members of the drug syndicate consisting of three Malaysians and three foreigners on Tuesday (16/12).Officers also managed to confiscate cars, forklifts and trucks related to the raid.
Head of Malaysia’s Narcotics Crime Investigation Department Hussein Omar Khan said the discovery was “clearly one of the largest drug seizures ever” in Malaysia.
“The drug can supply 68.5 million users,” Hussein told local media.
Based on the results of the investigation, the Malaysian police explained that one of the perpetrators acted as a depositary, the other as an assistant chemist.
Meanwhile, two local residents acted as trusted aides. Before the raid operation, Hussein said, police officers had long been scouting people’s houses and business premises which had been converted into drug laboratories.
The drug syndicate is believed to have been operating since last April to supply the international market.
The discovery of this drug factory also shocked the public because Malaysia is usually only used as a transit point for drug smuggling, including protected animals.
In 2019, Malaysian police seized 12 tons of cocaine in the northern state of Penang, worth US$573 million (Rp. 9.56 trillion).
