The Archbishop of Jakarta, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, offered sharp criticism of the rise
corruption case
which has ensnared a number of regional heads recently.
During the Christmas celebration, he emphasized that public positions held by governors and regents should be a tool for the welfare of the people, not for personal gain.
“These days we are treated to news that the regent has been arrested by the KPK, this governor has been arrested, and so on. This means that their positions are not being used to realize the common good. They must repent,” said Cardinal Suharyo after leading Mass at the Cathedral Church, Central Jakarta, Thursday (25/12).

Cardinal Suharyo highlighted a shift in mindset among officials in viewing power.According to him, many leaders simply enjoy the facilities of office without truly carrying out their moral responsibilities to society.
He differentiates between figures who only “occupy” a chair and those who truly “hold” a position.According to him, those who occupy positions often only seek comfort and facilities for their own interests.
Meanwhile, those who hold office use full authority as a mandate to create collective good.
“The hope is that officials will not just occupy a chair, because sitting in a chair is comfortable. However, they must carry out their mandate. If their position is used for their own interests, that is wrong. The position must be held for the common good,” he stressed.
Cardinal Suharyo also recalled the riots that hit Jakarta last August. He believes that this series of events, coupled with the massive number of corruption cases, is a strong signal that Indonesia needs collective inner change.
He also called for the term “National Repentance” as a step to restore the nation’s direction.Suharyo also called for returning the spirit of the ideals of independence which had been formulated in depth in Pancasila and the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution.
He also emphasized that repentance is not just a matter of formality, but a sincere change in inner attitude to glorify God through devotion to others.
Suharyo’s appeal was addressed to all elements of the nation, from ordinary people to holders of the highest power in state institutions.
“Everyone must repent to restore our ideals of independence. The basis is inner repentance, glorifying Allah, and dedicating one’s life to God,” concluded Suharyo, closing his Christmas message.
