The government will direct the focus
food self-sufficiency
to commodities
egg
and chicken meat starting next year to support the Free Nutritious Meal program (
MBG
).
Deputy Minister of Agriculture (Wamentan) Sudaryono said that after self-sufficiency in rice and corn is achieved this year, the government will continue by maintaining the sustainability of these two commodities while expanding the self-sufficiency target to the livestock sector.
“So, this year we will be self-sufficient in rice and corn, next year we will of course maintain rice and corn,” said Sudaryono at the Ministry of Agriculture Office, South Jakarta, Wednesday (10/12).

He explained that in the future the government will also aim for self-sufficiency in other strategic commodities, such as consumer and industrial sugar, as well as salt for consumption and industrial needs.
However, for the Ministry of Agriculture, the main focus next year will be on increasing egg, chicken and beef production, with an initial focus on eggs and chickens.
“Well, next year at the Ministry of Agriculture there will be two big programs. The first is how to increase the actual production of self-sufficient eggs and chickens and cows. But this time we are focusing on eggs and chickens, especially in areas outside Java,” he said.
Sudaryono explained that currently many livestock centers are still concentrated on the island of Java, while areas outside Java still depend on supplies from Java.In the future, the government targets each region to have its own food security.
“Because there are a lot of livestock farms in Java. So, outside Java, they are supplied from Java. So, the President’s (Prabowo Subianto) wish is for each region, each island, each province to have its own food security,” he said.
The egg and chicken self-sufficiency program is also prepared to answer the large need for MBG which is expected to continue to increase. The government, he said, has planned so that this need does not cause a shortage of supply.
“Especially to answer all my friends’ concerns regarding the need for MBG which is predicted to be a shortage, this is it. Well, we answered all of that. So we answered that we have worked on it next year,” he said.
He said the government had prepared integrated farms in 13 provinces outside Java, as well as one location in East Java. All these points have been identified and will involve various parties.
“We have prepared (integrated farms) in 13 provinces outside Java. Only in East Java. We have identified them all. Involving state-owned companies, then Kopdes Merah Putih, local breeders. The point is to increase egg and chicken production,” he said.
Apart from the livestock sector, the government is also starting to encourage downstream agriculture for a number of plantation and horticultural commodities.Sudaryono said there were around 11 commodities included in the program, including coconut, palm oil, cocoa, coffee and spices.
The policy direction is aimed at strengthening Indonesia’s position in global commodity trade.
“The President wants to return all plantation commodity products. We occupy the top position in the global trade arena. Our coconut must be champion, coffee must be champion, cocoa must be champion. Number one for all of them. We must export more,” said Sudaryono.
Previously, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said that the government would build feed factories for small farmers in various regions. In the initial stage, feed factories will be built at 12 points with a total budget of around IDR 20 trillion. The factory is projected to support around 3.7 million small farmers in Indonesia.
Amran also stated that the government would produce day old chicks (DOC) to maintain price stability for feed, vaccines and veterinary medicine. In addition, the government will determine the Cost of Goods Sold (HPP) and Highest Retail Price (HET) for animal feed so that prices do not fluctuate sharply.
On the other hand, the government is also preparing to develop laying hens and broiler chickens to support MBG needs.
Production of laying hens is targeted to reach tens of millions per year with an egg production capacity of around 1 million tons per year. Most of this production will be allocated to meet the needs of the MBG program.
Meanwhile, Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) Dadan Hindayana said that Indonesia needs millions of new breeders so that the supply of eggs and chickens does not experience a shortage.
He also revealed that every kitchen of the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) requires a large supply of animal food ingredients, so strengthening production at the regional level is the key to the sustainability of the MBG program.
