Israel
(IDF) faces “the worst human resources (HR) crisis in its history” amid severe personnel shortages.
This warning was conveyed by Itzhak Brik, on Sunday (30/11) in an opinion piece in the daily newspaper
Maariv
.
Brik said thousands of officers and non-commissioned officers had avoided service in recent months, either by refusing call-ups or refusing to renew their contracts.

During Israel’s two-year war on Gaza, the military lost 923 soldiers and recorded 6,399 injuries.Meanwhile, around 20,000 soldiers suffer from post-traumatic stress (
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
/PTSD), according to military data quoted by Israeli media.
Amid strict military censorship, the Israeli army has faced accusations of hiding greater losses to maintain morale.
Brik wrote that many officers asked for immediate release from duty and younger recruits refused to sign long-term contracts. This created widespread professional staff shortages throughout the military.
As reported
Anadolu
, this sharp decline in personnel numbers is now undermining equipment maintenance and the operation of combat systems. The military analyst warned the situation could soon cause soldiers to “lose the ability to fully function.”
Brik has repeatedly blamed the chief of staff for “bad decisions” in recent years, including deep personnel cuts and shorter service terms of three years for men and two years for women.
He said this creates a huge gap that cannot be fixed quickly. This gap, he continued, drives experienced professionals out of the service while leaving unprepared personnel in sensitive roles who are unable to handle today’s battlefield challenges.
Brik said the Israeli army’s human resources division had operated without professionalism or responsibility for years and ignored the core issues of managing human resources and assessing their needs.
The Israeli military suffers from “information blindness” due to outdated systems and fragmented databases.Brik warned the human resources crisis could escalate into “total paralysis” of the Israeli army.
Since October 2023, Israeli soldiers have killed more than 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 171,000 in a brutal war that has devastated much of the enclave.
