“[The US plans to set up a base in Damascus] to coordinate humanitarian aid and monitor developments between Syria and Israel,” one diplomatic source in Syria told
AFP
quoted on Sunday (9/11).
Meanwhile, US Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said Sharaa would “hopefully” sign an agreement to join the US-led international alliance against terrorist groups, especially ISIS.
Some suspect Sharaa’s visit to the US was to seek help in reconstructing Syria after 13 years of civil war.
Expert and Director of the International Crisis Group’s US Program, Michael Hanna, said the Syrian President’s visit to the White House was also further evidence of the Trump administration’s commitment to the new Syria.
“And a deeply symbolic moment for the country’s new leader, thus marking the next step in his astonishing transformation from militia leader to global statesman,” Hanna said.
Sharaa’s visit to the US took place after the country removed the Syrian leader from its terrorist blacklist.
Sharaa is the leader of the Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS) militia which is considered affiliated with the Al Qaeda group.
US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigot said the Sharaa government had met demands including trying to find missing Americans and destroying any remaining chemical weapons.
Pigot also said delisting would promote Syria’s security, regional stability and inclusive political process.
“This action was taken in recognition of the progress demonstrated by the Syrian leadership after Bashar al-Assad and more than 50 years of oppression under the Assad regime fell,” Pigott said.
Since Sharaa came to power, Syria has appeared to break away from its past and try to build a moderate image. However, violence and security remain key issues there.
