For four decades, Cliff wrote and performed songs that blended reggae with his sensibilities for folk, soul, rhythm and blues, ska, and rock.He also often raises issues such as politics, injustice, poverty and war protests.
Cliff built a cult following starting with the hugely successful 1972 film, “The Hardey They Come,” as a rural young man dealing with gangs and street life as he tried to break into the Jamaican music business.
This was inspired by his own experience growing up in poverty, and introducing himself to reggae music to the global community.
“The essence of my music is struggle,” Cliff said in 1986, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Jimmy Cliff was born in July 1944 as James Chambers in Saint James Parish, western Jamaica. After showing an early talent for singing, his father took him to Kingston at the age of 14 to pursue music.
By the age of 17, he was already a local star and soon moved to England, releasing records on the Island Records label throughout the late 1960s, including “Vietnam”.
Two decades later, he is widely known. In addition to the film and soundtrack “The Harder They Come”, he also sang with the Rolling Stones, The Clash, and Annie Lennox.
