“I regret to inform you that due to serious concerns and requests from the athletes’ families for their relatives to return home immediately, the NOCC had to withdraw our entire delegation and arrange their immediate return to Cambodia for security reasons.”
“This was not an easy decision. We apologize for any inconvenience this early return may cause and remain grateful for your understanding and support,” the statement said.
Before the decision to withdraw all athletes, Cambodia first announced that it would cancel sending athletes in more than five sports, namely football, sepak takraw, petanque, pencak silat, judo, karate, wushu and wrestling.
At that time, Cambodia also decided not to send athletes due to security concerns and efforts to protect the safety of athletes and officials.
Cambodia and Thailand are involved in a border conflict that has been going on for almost 20 years. In the first half of 2025 the situation became complicated because there was a shootout. The situation became increasingly heated because on July 24 there were attacks from both countries.
On Monday (8/12) there was another attack which resulted in casualties and hundreds of thousands of civilians being displaced.
