This week’s clashes were the deadliest since the two neighboring countries engaged in a five-day border conflict last July, which killed dozens of people and displaced around 300,000 people.
Cambodia accused Thai troops of firing at a number of points on Monday (8/12) evening, killing two people who were traveling on the national road.
Cambodia’s Defense Ministry also accused Thailand of continuing attacks at around 5am on Tuesday in border areas, including in the area of centuries-old temples such as the UNESCO world heritage site, Preah Vihear Temple.
Meanwhile, Thai Navy spokesman Parat Rattanachaiphan said that Thai troops had recently detected Cambodian troops, settlements and several weapons bases in the disputed coastal area of Trat Province.
Parat accused Cambodia of increasing tensions by deploying drones to provoke Thai troops.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, told reporters that his country’s military would remain steadfast.
“Thailand must stand firmly behind those who protect our sovereignty. We cannot stop now,” added Anutin.
Thailand and Cambodia’s conflict centers on a century-old dispute over borders mapped during French colonization of the region.
In the conflict that broke out last July, the United States, China and Malaysia as Chairs of ASEAN this year mediated the battle between the two countries.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the European Union and the Malaysian Prime Minister have urged both sides to exercise restraint to end the conflict.
