Russia
expressed openness to a United States proposal to end the war in
Ukraine
.President Vladimir Putin said Friday that the document “could be the basis of a final peace settlement”, although he stressed the plan had not been substantially discussed with Moscow.
“I believe the plan can become the basis for a peaceful settlement,” Putin said.”But the text has not been seriously discussed with us, and I can guess the reason. The US government has not been able to get approval from Ukraine,” he said, citing

Putin claimed Kyiv and its European allies “still have illusions” of defeating Russia strategically on the battlefield.
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a much different message. In a public address on Friday evening, he said Ukraine was facing one of the most difficult moments in its history, choosing between defending its sovereignty and maintaining vital support from the United States.
The plan proposed by the US reportedly requires Ukraine to cede some of its territory to Russia, something Kyiv has rejected, as well as reducing its military posture and closing the path to NATO membership.
Zelenskyy did not reject the plan outright. He stressed the need to be treated fairly while pledging to “work calmly” with Washington and other partners.
“The pressure on Ukraine right now is one of the heaviest,” he said.”We may face a very difficult choice, lose our dignity or risk losing key partners.”
Trump gave a week deadline
US President Donald Trump, in a radio interview on Friday, said he wanted answers from Zelenskyy on the 28-point plan by next Thursday.Even so, he opened up the opportunity for an extension if discussions went well.
“If everything goes well, usually the deadline can be extended. But Thursday is the time we think is appropriate,” Trump said.
Zelenskyy has previously expressed a willingness to negotiate with the US and Russia, but has also acknowledged Ukraine will not get everything it wants. He warned that rejection of the US plan could lead to a loss of Washington’s support.
In his speech, he called on Ukrainians to “stop fighting each other”, allegedly referring to a major corruption scandal that sparked sharp criticism of the government. He said negotiations next week would be “very difficult”.
Europe ensures continued support
Amid these dynamics, European leaders are seeking to reaffirm their support for Kyiv.Zelenskyy reportedly held telephone calls with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Merz said the three European leaders were committed to providing Ukraine’s “full and unchanging support” towards a just and sustainable peace.
They are also careful about responding to the US proposal which is considered sudden and surprising to Europe. However, the leaders welcomed Washington’s initiative positively and highlighted the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine.
“Current lines of contact should be the starting point of agreement,” the joint statement said, stressing that Ukraine must remain able to effectively defend its sovereignty.
Starmer added that Ukraine’s right to determine its future “under its own sovereignty” was a fundamental non-negotiable principle.
