President of Russia
Vladimir Putin
declared medium-range ballistic missiles,
Oreshnik
, will be ready for use in combat at the end of this year.
“At the end of this year, the new medium-range missile system with the Oreshnik hypersonic missile will enter combat service,” Putin said at a meeting with top military officials in Moscow, Wednesday (17/2).
The Oreshnik missile is claimed to be capable of carrying multiple warheads and can travel at speeds of up to Mach 10. Putin claims this missile cannot be intercepted and has a scale of destruction that is as devastating as a nuclear attack.

Russian state media said Oreshnik only needed 11 minutes to reach an air base in Poland and 17 minutes to reach NATO headquarters in Brussels. It is not yet known whether this missile carries a nuclear or conventional warhead in its operations.
Medium-range missiles have a range of around 500-5,500 kilometers.Such weapons were banned in a Soviet-era treaty that the United States and Russia abandoned in 2019.
Reporting from
The Moscow Times
, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the Oreshnik missile range poses a threat to Europe.Zelensky has urged Western countries to impose sanctions on Russian companies involved in its development.
The Oreshnik missile was first revealed to the public in November 2024 after being used in a Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
Putin at the time said the attack was a successful test and described the first use of the missile as a warning to the US and Britain as it considered supplying long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Prior to this, Putin stated that he would deploy Oreshnik missiles to Belarus before the end of the year.On Thursday (18/12), Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the missile had arrived in his country since Wednesday and would begin to be used in combat.
Lukashenko on that occasion did not specify how many Oreshnik missiles had been deployed to Belarus, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.
Lukashenko’s announcement comes as negotiations to end the war in Ukraine enter a crucial phase.Russia has threatened to expand its attacks on Ukraine if Kyiv and Western countries reject the Kremlin’s demands.
United States President Donald Trump has tried to end the Russia vs Ukraine war by offering a number of peace proposals. However, Ukraine rejected this proposal because it was considered very beneficial to Russia.
