Purbaya had revealed that the threat of freezing the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) and laying off 16 thousand employees was not his order.
This threat will be implemented if Customs and Excise’s performance does not improve within one year.Purbaya admitted that the order to freeze and lay off 16 thousand employees did not come from him, but was an order from his superiors.
For your information, in the Indonesian government system, the minister of finance is responsible to the president.
“We’ll give it a year to fix it, otherwise we’ll lay off 16 thousand of our employees. It’s not (an order) from me, it’s from the boss above,” said Purbaya in the Interactive Dialogue between Central and Regional Governments at the Bidakara Hotel, Jakarta, Thursday (11/12) as quoted

Purbaya said that the threat was a whip so that employees would really improve DJBC.If he is unable to do so, he will adopt the method of the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, who recruited the Swiss company Suisse Generale Surveillance (SGS3) to carry out customs duties.
“So I use it to encourage Customs and Excise to work better to improve its performance, so that we no longer need to hand it over to foreigners, when our country can’t afford it,” he said.
He admitted that currently there are still many leaks in export services and supervision carried out by Customs and Excise.Purbaya told of his findings when he inspected the port.Because of this, Purbaya wants Customs and Excise supervision to be better in the next year.He hopes that there will be no more smuggled illegal products, mainly from China.
“In the next year, I will fix Customs so that there are no illegal smuggled goods from China,” he said.
The threat that Purbaya made several times was responded to by the Director General of Customs and Excise, Djaka Budhi Utama.
Djaka is confident that his agency can improve and all efforts to improve it can be completed by 2026, aka within one year, according to Purbaya’s ultimatum.
“Optimistic, we have to be optimistic. If we are not optimistic, next year (2026) we will have everything finished. Do you want Customs and Excise or Customs and Excise employees to be laid off and just eat a blind salary? Of course you won’t,” said Djaka after the destruction of illegal BKC at the Jakarta Customs and Excise Regional Office, Wednesday (3/12).
Improvement efforts will start from DJBC’s work culture.Djaka also encourages improving the performance of his subordinates, which is achieved through strict supervision at ports and airports. He promised to improve all services for the community.
“Perhaps the image in society that Customs and Excise is a nest for extortion is little by little we are eliminating. We are asking for support from the public to support how we will be better in the future,” added Djaka.
