“It’s still too early to talk to the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (Rini) about freezing employees. The steps are still not there,” said Purbaya after the inauguration of the container scanning equipment at Terminal 3 and Mustika Alam Sari Terminal, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, Friday (12/12).
He emphasized that the steps that will be taken in the next year are improvements to Customs and Excise.Purbaya wants to apply advanced technology and train the directorate’s employees.

According to him, the seriousness of the intention to improve itself within Customs and Excise has begun to appear.
This can be seen from the launch of container scanning tools (X-Ray) as well as digital innovations called Self Service Report Mobile (SSR-Mobile) and Trade AI.
The use of scanners, according to Purbaya, can strengthen the transparency and security of the flow of goods and close the loopholes for fraud.On the other hand, the sophistication of Trade AI is also claimed to be able to prevent practices
underinvoicing.
“This means that they (Customs and Excise) are capable. They just need to push, beat, push. They are smart people, so we don’t need to worry,” he said optimistically.
“Later, if there is no progress in the next year, maybe we will think about that (freezing Customs and laying off 16 thousand employees). But if progress is made, that’s good, what else is there to do?”he continued.
Previously, Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Rini Widyantini admitted that she asked Purbaya for time to discuss the fate of 16 thousand Customs and Excise employees who were threatened with being laid off.
He admitted that he had not had time to discuss directly with Purbaya regarding the problems of Customs employees.Rini said that the State Treasurer still had several other agendas.
“Of course I have to see whether the institution or system really needs to be improved, then we’ll talk about the person. So, I haven’t had any discussions with him (Purbaya),” said Rini after the Press Conference on the Development of the OECD Accession Process at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Central Jakarta, last Thursday (11/12).
