This rejuvenation step is said to be part of a long-term strategy to strengthen the position of Indonesian Arabica coffee in the global market and as a future investment for the national coffee industry.
“We don’t just plant coffee trees, we plant the future,” said President Director of PTPN IV PalmCo, Jatmiko K. Santosa, on Friday (14/11).
“Ijen coffee has advantages that not many other regions have. The world needs to know that the best coffee also grows in Bondowoso, not just in Latin America,” he said.
Ijen Arabica coffee is known to have distinctive taste characteristics, such as light to medium body, floral aroma, and balanced acidity. This combination means that JCE coffee is starting to penetrate export markets in East Asia, Europe and North America.
This replanting program will start in 2022 and will be carried out in stages. The first year involved 383 hectares of gardens being renewed, then 251 hectares in 2023, 407 hectares in 2024, and 293 hectares in 2025. The total gardens managed by JCE reached 3,530 hectares.
The Arabica seeds used are superior varieties that are adaptive to the climate of the Ijen mountains and produce a distinctive taste. The application of agronomic practices also prioritizes soil and water conservation, two vital elements in volcanic slope areas that are prone to erosion.
“This replanting is a green investment. We want the garden to remain productive without sacrificing environmental balance,” said Jatmiko.
Despite carrying out massive rejuvenation, production performance has not decreased.Throughout 2025, JCE’s cherry coffee production was recorded at 5,534 tonnes, an increase compared to 4,987 tonnes in the previous year.Meanwhile, the volume of green beans or coffee beans ready for export increased from 825 tons to 893 tons.
Land productivity is stable at around 2,530 kilograms of cherry coffee per hectare and 409 kilograms of green beans per hectare.Until October 2025, JCE posted a net profit of around IDR 14 billion. This positive performance is proof that economic growth and sustainability can go hand in hand.
“The world market now demands transparency and responsibility. They want to know where coffee comes from and how it is grown. We answer these demands through responsible practices from upstream to downstream,” said Jatmiko.
Collaboration between PTPN IV and PTPN I through the KSO scheme has proven effective in accelerating the recovery of plantation productivity. The two BUMNs share roles in asset management, management and improving production quality.
However, said Jatmiko, sustainability is not only measured by harvest tonnage or company profits. With a strong foundation at the plantation level and sustainable management, Arabica coffee from the slopes of Ijen is increasingly ready to introduce Indonesian flavors to the world stage.
“We want the community to grow with us. From plantation workers, partner farmers, to the younger generation around Ijen – everyone should feel like they have a future from this coffee,” said
Jatmiko
