Prabowo symbolically handed over the title of national hero directly to Suharto’s 3rd son, Bambang Trihatmodjo.
Soeharto served as President of the Republic of Indonesia for 32 years. His leadership began with a warrant on March 11, 1966, until reforms broke out in 1998.
Suharto was declared a national hero along with nine other figures today.
Some of them are the 4th President Abdurrachman Wahid alias Gus Dur, Nahdlatul Ulama figure Muhammad Kholil, and New Order era activist and labor figure Marsinah.
In the process, Soeharto’s designation as a hero reaped pros and cons among society. This relates to allegations of gross human rights violations, authoritarianism, and allegations of rampant corruption, collusion and nepotism during the Soeharto regime.
One of them was from the Justice Soeharto Civil Society Movement (GEMAS) which stated that the proposal was a disappointing step.
“Today the Ministry of Social Affairs, through its minister, has also sent a name proposal which will be submitted to the Council for Degrees, Service Certificates and Honors. Of course, this is a disappointing step but also not surprising,” said KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya as a representative of the coalition when contacted, Tuesday (21/10).
Criticism also came from Mustasyar, the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board, KH Ahmad Mustofa Bisri alias Gus Mus, who rejected this.He said that many Islamic boarding school and NU clerics were treated unfairly during Soeharto’s rule.
“I at least agree that Suharto was made a National Hero,” said Gus Mus at his residence in Leteh, Rembang, Central Java, as reported by NU Online, Sunday (9/11).
