The Ministry of Forestry will conduct an in-depth audit and evaluation of
PT Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk
on suspicion of being one of the causes of the disaster
flood
and landslides in North Sumatra.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said this was a direct order from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
“PT Toba Pulp Lestari, PT TPL, which have been widely reported, the President specifically ordered me to carry out a total audit and evaluation of this TPL,” said Raja Juli at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Monday (15/12).

Raja Juli said he assigned Deputy Minister of Forestry Rohmat Marzuki to monitor this audit and evaluation process.
Then, if this company really violates the rules, he stated that the Ministry of Forestry has the potential to revoke the Toba Pulp PBPH or reduce the area of forest land that can be managed.
“If there are results, I will announce them again to the public, whether we will withdraw them or we will rationalize the PBPH which they have controlled in the last few years,” he said.
At the same time, Raja Juli said that he had also revoked 22 PBPHs belonging to rogue companies with an area of 1,012,016 hectares.
Of the entire area, 116,198 hectares are on Sumatra Island.
“I will write down the details of this revocation decree and I will convey it later,” he said.
Raja Juli said that Prabowo also ordered the Ministry of Forestry to double its forestry police personnel.
He said the addition of forest police personnel was to suppress illegal logging practices which have been destroying Indonesia’s forests.
“For Aceh, which has a forest area of 3.5 million hectares, we only have 30 forest rangers, 32 people. This is completely unreasonable and the President immediately asked me to double the number of our forest rangers,” he said.
PT Toba Pulp Lestari denies this
PT Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk denies involvement in causing the floods which have claimed thousands of lives.
The rebuttal was conveyed via an official letter to the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) on Monday (1/12).
“The company firmly denies accusations that operations are the cause of ecological disasters,” said Corporate Secretary Anwar Lawden, quoted on Tuesday (2/12).
Anwar Lawden explained that of the total area of 167,912 hectares, the company only developed around 46 thousand hectares of eucalyptus plants, while the rest was maintained as a protected and conservation area.
“All HTI (Industrial Plantation Forest) activities have gone through a High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS) assessment by a third party to ensure the implementation of the principles of Sustainable Forest Management,” he said.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) audit in 2022-2023 stated that the company complied with all regulations without environmental or social violations.
“Regarding the allegations of deforestation, we emphasize that the Company carries out harvesting and replanting operations within the concession based on the spatial layout, General Work Plan (RKU), and Annual Work Plan (RKT) that have been determined by the government,” stressed Anwar.
