Of the 10 names who will receive the title of national hero, Pras confirmed that the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, would be one of them.
Pras said that Suharto was considered entitled to the title of national hero because of his services in building the Indonesian nation during his 32 years of leadership.
“Once again, as we said yesterday, that is part of how we respect our predecessors, especially our leaders, who of course have extraordinary services to the nation and state,” said Pras.
Separately, Fadli Zon also said that Suharto was considered worthy of being called a national hero because he was involved in a number of military operations in the past, he gave the example of fighting the Dutch in the March 1 1949 General Offensive and the liberation operation of West Irian aka Trikora in the 1960s.
However, Fadli denied that Suharto was involved in the massacre of people accused of being PKI or affiliated with the PKI after the 1965 G30S.
Apart from Suharto, other figures who are rumored to be receiving the title of national hero today are the 4th President of the Republic of Indonesia Abdurrachman Wahid alias Gus Dur and the labor activist in the Soeharto regime, Marsinah.
Some time ago, Fadli Zon said they met the requirements for the title of national hero.Especially for Suharto, his proposal to receive the title of national hero sparked controversy.
One of them was from the Justice Soeharto Civil Society Movement (GEMAS) which stated that the proposal was a disappointing step.
“Today the Ministry of Social Affairs, through its minister, has also sent a name proposal which will be submitted to the Council for Degrees, Service Certificates and Honors. Of course, this is a disappointing step but also not surprising,” said KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya as a representative of the coalition when contacted, Tuesday (21/10).
Criticism also came from Mustasyar, the Nahdlatul Ulama General Manager, KH Ahmad Mustofa Bisri (Gus Mus), who rejected the plan.
“I at least agree that Suharto was made a National Hero,” said Gus Mus at his residence in Leteh, Rembang, Central Java, as reported by NU Online, Sunday (9/11).
He said that many Islamic boarding school and NU clerics were treated unfairly during Soeharto’s rule.
“Many kiai were put in wells, NU nameplates were not allowed to be put up, many of those who were ordered to put them up were torn down by the regents. My own younger brother, Kiai Adib Bisri, finally left the civil service because he was forced to join Golkar,” he said.
Regarding the pros and cons, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said this was something that normally happens in democratic life.
However, he invited all parties to look at things from a positive perspective.Especially, when it comes to previous leaders. He said that we as the nation’s successors must respect their services.
“So it’s like this, regarding the title of hero, of course we go through all the procedures. That there are pros and cons, that some may agree or not is part of the aspiration,” said Pras at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Friday (7/11).
