Indonesia overtook Thailand and ranked first in ASEAN for the number of registered geographical indications based on ASEAN IP Register data as of 27 November 2025.
A geographical indication is a sign that indicates the area of origin of a good or product which, due to geographical environmental factors (natural, human, or a combination thereof), has a certain reputation, quality and characteristics.
A total of 246 products from within the country and 15 from abroad have been registered and protected by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law.Especially for domestic products, the number increased rapidly compared to the previous year’s achievement of 167 products.

Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas said this achievement confirmed Indonesia’s commitment to providing protection for unique products that are superior in each region.
According to him, this cannot be separated from the synergy of the central, regional governments, associations or the Geographical Indication Protection Society (MPIG).
“Geographical indications have now become an important instrument in raising local potential to the international level. This is proof that indigenous regional products have strong economic value when protected and managed well. This achievement shows that Indonesia is on the right track in strengthening the community-based intellectual property ecosystem,” said Supratman in Jakarta, Friday (28/11).
Based on DJKI data, from within the country, Central Java is the province with the highest number of registered geographical indications with 24 products, followed by East Nusa Tenggara with 21 and East Java with 18 registered products.
The three of them consistently become centers of growth for geographical indications because of their ability to maintain production standards, quality and traditions that strengthen the unique character of each product.
Meanwhile, based on type, agricultural and plantation products dominate the number of registered geographical indications, namely 164 products with Kintamani Bali Arabica Coffee as the first product of this type to be registered.
This was followed by handicraft products with 57, marine and fisheries products with 17, as well as forestry and livestock products with four products each.
Supratman said this achievement was in accordance with the targets that had been set. This success is also a motivation for the government to continue to explore the potential of geographical indications in Indonesia.
“Indonesia is the second largest megabiodiversity country in the world, we are sure that there are many more regional specialty products that could potentially have geographical indications protected. Protecting them could be a strategy to increase the competitiveness of local products as a source of economic improvement in the region,” said Supratman.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Intellectual Property, Hermansyah Siregar, emphasized DJKI’s commitment to continuing to improve and strengthen services and assistance for geographical indication registration.
“I hope that Indonesia will not only lead in terms of numbers like now, but will also be the best in governance, community empowerment and economic use of Geographical Indications. This is part of our efforts to make intellectual property a driver of the national economy,” said Hermansyah.
