The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the start of the 101st Academy Awards or event
Oscars 2029
, the event will be broadcast live on YouTube.
The decision comes after AMPAS entered into a multi-year partnership with YouTube until 2033, while ending a decades-long partnership with ABC which will air the Oscars for the last time in 2028.

Shows that will be broadcast on YouTube include red carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes content and Governors Ball. All will be available live and free on YouTube globally.
However, a source familiar with this matter told Variety as reported on Wednesday (17/12), that there will still be advertisements in these shows.
They hope the move will help make the Oscars more accessible to “the Academy’s growing global audience through features like closed captioning and audio tracks available in multiple languages.”
“We are thrilled to forge this diverse global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,” said AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer and AMPAS President Lynette Howell Taylor in a statement.
“The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the Academy’s work to the largest global audience possible—which will benefit both our Academy members and the film community,” he continued.
“The Oscars are one of our important cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry,” said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan.
“Partnering with the Academy to bring this celebration of arts and entertainment to audiences around the world will inspire a new generation of creatives and film lovers while remaining true to the Oscars’ historic legacy.”
Variety
said that throughout 2025 AMPAS will be looking for a new licensing agreement. They also opened up opportunities to other parties, including NBCUniversal and Netflix.
Sources say YouTube paid up to nine figures to broadcast the Oscars, beating out eight-figure offers from Disney/ABC and NBCUniversal.
Under the latest contract, Disney is paying about $100 million a year for the Oscars. However, considering the decline in ratings the show is experiencing, Disney/ABC is reportedly looking to reduce spending on licensing fees.
Sources said Disney officials were surprised that YouTube, which is the sole provider of the full streaming service, won the bid.Initially, they only anticipated the opportunity to fall to NBCUniversal, which also has the Peacock streaming service.
Sources say the surprise is also because YouTube does not have its own production team, like Netflix and Amazon do.It is true that there is a chance that YouTube could form this team in the three years before 2029, but it could be that AMPAS chose YouTube because they wanted to take over the entire Oscar production.
Variety said AMPAS and Disney/ABC sometimes disagreed about the Oscars, starting from the duration, the awards given, to who should be the host. Now fully on streaming services, the Oscars can take place without time limits and AMPAS has complete freedom over the Oscars event.
“They can do whatever they want,” said an internal source.”You can have six hours of Oscars hosted by MrBeast.”
But there are a number of things that remain unanswered, such as the Academy’s international distribution deal for the Oscars, additional licensing fees and advertising revenue, and audience measurement.
