Merdeka (GAM) in the public space has recently been deemed not only to have violated applicable legal provisions, but also to have violated Aceh’s commitment to peace which has been built through a long post-conflict process.
Public policy observer and Trisakti University Professor Trubus Rahardiansah said the GAM symbol has strong historical and political meaning because it is directly related to armed separatist movements in the past.
Therefore, its appearance in public spaces cannot be seen as an ordinary expression.

“Aceh peace is the result of a major agreement that ended decades of conflict. Displaying GAM symbols in public spaces is not only a violation of the law, but also a form of denial of the spirit of peace itself,” said Trubus, in his official statement Thursday (25/12).
He assessed that this action had the potential to trigger social tension and reopen old wounds of the Acehnese people who had tried to rise up and organize their lives in a peaceful atmosphere.
This assessment emerged following the dispersal of a group of people carrying the GAM flag in Lhokseumawe City, Aceh, by TNI AD soldiers from Korem 011/Lilawangsa.During the dispersal, the authorities confiscated a revolver and a sharp rencong weapon.
Danrem 011/Lilawangsa Colonel Inf Ali Imran said the disbandment was carried out when the group was carrying out an action in the middle of the national road across Banda Aceh-Medan, precisely at Simpang Kandang, Meunasah Mee, Muara Dua District, Lhokseumawe City.
As a result of this action, traffic flow was disrupted.Even though it was filled with tension, the disbandment took place without violence.After a persuasive approach, banners and banners resembling the GAM flag were handed over voluntarily by the crowd, who then dispersed.
Ali Imran emphasized that the disbandment was carried out persuasively and received support from the local community.In this process, TNI soldiers arrested a man who was suspected of being a provocateur because he was carrying a bag containing a revolver and a sharp rencong weapon.
Trubus assessed that the approach taken by the authorities was important, especially because the disbandment was led directly by Danrem who was a native of Aceh, so he had a strong social and cultural understanding of the sensitivity of the local community.
“When law enforcement is carried out by figures who are also Acehnese children, the message sent is not repressive, but an invitation to maintain the dignity of Aceh as a region that has chosen the path of peace,” said Trubus.
He emphasized that peace in Aceh is not only the responsibility of the state, but also the joint commitment of all elements of society not to return to symbols, narratives and actions that have the potential to divide.
“Maintaining peace in Aceh means respecting the agreements that have been reached. Any action that leads to the glorification of symbols of past conflict clearly violates that commitment,” he concluded.
Trubus added that Aceh’s peace can only be sustainable when the law is strictly enforced.According to Trubus, society should not be sacrificed by the interests of anti-peace groups who often take advantage of the Aceh situation by provoking certain individuals and/or community groups to disrupt public order.
“Decisive steps from the authorities are very necessary so that public trust remains optimal,” he said.
