According to the Kyodo report, the official was involved in formulating Japan’s security policy. He also stated that Japan could ultimately only rely on itself to guarantee its security.
Responding to this statement, North Korea said Japan had openly demonstrated its ambition to possess nuclear weapons and exceeded intolerable limits.
“Japan’s attempt to become a nuclear country must be prevented at all costs because it will bring great disaster to mankind,” said the Director of the Institute of Japanese Studies under the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Sunday (21/12), reported by AFP.
“This is not a misrepresentation or a reckless claim, but clearly reflects Japan’s long-held ambition to develop nuclear weapons,” said the unnamed North Korean official.
The official also warned that Japan’s possession of nuclear weapons would have a devastating impact on Asian countries and trigger a terrible nuclear disaster.
The statement did not mention North Korea’s own nuclear program.Pyongyang is known to have carried out its first nuclear test in 2006, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
North Korea is believed to have dozens of nuclear warheads and has repeatedly said it will maintain its arsenal even in the face of international sanctions.Pyongyang considers nuclear weapons necessary to ward off military threats from the United States and its allies.
In his speech at the UN General Assembly last September, North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong emphasized that his country would not give up nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
“We will never give up on nuclear, which is our country’s constitution, national policy and sovereign power, as well as our right to existence. Under no circumstances will we abandon this position,” he said.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also said he was open to dialogue with the United States, as long as Pyongyang was allowed to maintain its nuclear arsenal.
