Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu
confirmed that he would continue to visit
New York
even though the elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani previously stated that he was ready to order the local police to arrest him according to an order from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“Yes, I will come to New York,” said Netanyahu in a virtual interview with the Dealbook forum held by The New York Times, Wednesday (3/12) local time.
When asked if he would talk to Mamdani, Netanyahu replied, “If he changes his mind and says that we have a right to exist, that could be a good start to a conversation,” he quoted

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who would become New York’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, has repeatedly said he supports the existence of the state of Israel. But he refused to say that Israel has the right to be a Jewish state, arguing that no country should have a “hierarchy of citizenship” based on religion or other identities.
Mamdani also vowed to deploy the New York Police Department (NYPD) to enforce arrest warrants for leaders wanted by the ICC, including Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Hague-based ICC last year said it had strong suspicions that Netanyahu was responsible for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel’s offensive in Gaza following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Israel condemned the accusations.
Israel, the United States and Russia are countries that refuse to become members of the ICC.
However, the chances of the NYPD arresting Netanyahu are considered very small. The mayor’s authority to enforce the ICC’s mandate has also been debated. In addition, President Donald Trump’s administration has repeatedly defended Israel and even imposed sanctions on ICC judges and prosecutors.
New York itself is home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel, as well as being the location of the United Nations headquarters.Netanyahu also regularly attends the UN General Assembly in the city.
Under host country agreements, the United States is required to issue visas to officials making official visits to the United Nations. However, last September the Trump administration refused to grant entry permission to Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas.
