“After interviewing various candidates, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to appoint Military Secretary Major General Roman Gofman as Director of Israel’s Mossad,” PM Netanyahu’s office said in a statement, as quoted

.
Gofman will replace David Barnea, whose term of office expires in June 2026.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported the appointment of Gofman, who is a Mossad outsider, indicating that Netanyahu ignored Barnea’s two proposed candidates.
Gofman is an official known to be close to Netanyahu. While in office since 2024, he traveled on Netanyahu’s behalf and oversaw the implementation of Netanyahu’s directives in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Gofman began his service in the IDF Armored Corps in 1995. He then served as a tank commander in the 188th Armored Brigade.
In 2011, he commanded the 7th Armored Brigade’s 75th Battalion, and in 2013 he served as the 36th Division’s operations officer.
In 2015, Gofman led the Etzion Regional Brigade in the West Bank, including during a major wave of terror attacks. Then in 2017, he returned to the Armored Corps to command the 7th Armored Brigade.
Gofman in 2020 was appointed commander of the 210th “Bushan” Regional Division, responsible for the border with Syria.
During that time, he was involved in controversy because he approved the assignment of an underage teenager to military operations.
This case makes him potentially face the law because last March, the IDF Military Defense asked military prosecutors to open an investigation into Gofman regarding the boy’s recruitment.
Gofman meanwhile has admitted he did not know the teenager was a minor.
