“Marsinah is a face of courage in fighting for human dignity. This naming is a form of our respect for her struggle which is an important part of Indonesia’s human rights history,” said Pigai in a statement in Jakarta, Monday.
Pigai said this naming was also a form of recognition of Marsinah’s courage and determination to fight for the basic rights of workers, including the right to decent wages, freedom of association and humane treatment in the workplace.
According to him, the traces of Marsinah’s struggle, whose death case has not been resolved until now, must continue to be remembered as a lesson for the state in strengthening protection for workers and activists who defend the truth.
The Marsinah Room is located on the 1st floor of the Ministry of Human Rights office which is now called the K.H.Abdurrahman Wahid.Later, the Marsinah Room will be used as a center for public services in the field of human rights for the community.
Pigai hopes that the naming of this labor activist figure can be a reminder to the Indonesian Ministry of Human Rights of its moral duty to defend the weak, provide services without discrimination, and fight for justice for all citizens.
“The spirit of Marsinah is the spirit of humanity. By naming this room the ‘Marsinah Room’, we want to ensure that her dedication and sacrifice are not lost to time,” said Pigai.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto awarded the title of National Hero to 10 figures who were deemed to have made great contributions to the nation and state, including Marsinah.
Marsinah is a worker at the PT Catur Putra Surya (CPS) watch factory. The case occurred in 1993 in Sidoarjo, East Java, when the activist launched a work strike with his colleagues to demand an increase in wages according to government standards.
On May 5 1993, after several workers were detained at the Sidoarjo Military District Command (Kodim), Marsinah was last seen when he went to the headquarters to ask about the fate of his colleagues.
Three days later, on May 8 1993, Marsinah’s body was found in a hut in Nganjuk with signs of severe torture and sexual violence.
