The mountain, which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level (masl), experienced 83 earthquake eruptions since early Sunday (14/12).
“In the last six-hour observation period on Sunday at 06.00-12.00 WIB, 40 earthquake eruptions were recorded with an amplitude of 10-22 mm with an earthquake duration of 66-173 seconds,” said Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer, Mukdas Sofian in a written report received in Lumajang.

Apart from the eruption earthquake, Mount Semeru also experienced three gust earthquakes with an amplitude of 4-8 mm and two distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 15 mm.
“For visual observations, Mount Semeru was covered in fog, crater smoke was not observed. The weather was clear to cloudy, the wind was weak towards the north and northeast,” he said.
Previously, during the observation period for Mount Semeru at 00.00-06.00 WIB, 43 eruption earthquakes were recorded with an amplitude of 10-23 mm, then 4 avalanche earthquakes with an amplitude of 2-8 mm and 8 gust earthquakes with an amplitude of 3-8 mm.
The status of Mount Semeru is still at Level III or alert, so the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) has given a number of recommendations, namely not to carry out any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 km from the peak (center of the eruption).
“Beyond this distance, people do not carry out activities within 500 meters of the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because they have the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 km from the peak,” he said.
The public is also prohibited from carrying out activities within a 5 km radius of the crater/top of Semeru Volcano because it is prone to the danger of throwing stones (flare).
The public is also asked to be aware of the potential for hot cloud avalanches (APG), lava avalanches, and lahars along rivers/valleys that originate at the peak of Semeru Volcano, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat as well as the potential for lahars in small rivers which are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
