This year’s Miss Universe ended last week in Thailand with Miss Mexico winning, after several incidents, including an argument between the winner and the host.
A court official in Thailand told
AFP
on Wednesday (26/11) an arrest warrant was issued the day before for the co-owner of the contest, Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, regarding alleged fraud worth US$930 million (around Rp. 15.5 billion)
Meanwhile, a plastic surgeon accused Jakapong of cheating and hiding data when convincing him to invest in JKN Global Group, the company that co-owns the contest.
Mexican federal prosecutors said another co-owner, Raul Rocha Cantu, was being investigated for alleged arms, narcotics and fuel trafficking.
They said they had gathered information to continue and deepen the investigation process.
The prosecutor’s office added that arrest warrants were issued for 13 people, but did not reveal their identities.
Mexican media reported that Rocha was among the names that authorities were looking for.
Local reports also linked Rocha to alleged business ties with the father of newly elected Miss Universe, Fatima Bosch.
But his father, Bernando Bosch, who serves as a senior executive at state oil company Pemex, denied having any connection to Rocha.
Bosch received positive attention after leading the finalists’ exit from a meeting with the Thai contest director, Nawat Itsaragrisil.
Nawat scolded him for not uploading promotional content on social media and called him “stupid”.
Her actions against Nawat drew praise, including from Mexico’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum.
On Tuesday (25/11), the 25 year old woman admitted to receiving insults and death threats due to her father’s accusations.
Jakapong’s JKN Global Group bought the contest for 20 million dollars in 2022, then sold half of its ownership to Rocha Cantu’s Legacy Holding Group USA for US$ 16 million (around Rp. 317 billion)
