The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) is accelerating efforts to clean up piles of disaster waste wood
flood
and mud material in a number of areas affected by flooding in
Sumatra
together with other ministries/institutions and local communities.
Head of the Gunung Leuser National Park (BBTNGL) Ministry of Forestry, Subhan, said that accelerating cleanup was a priority to restore community access and activities, especially in public facilities and residential areas.
“We are deploying personnel and equipment to the maximum so that the cleaning of the pile of disaster waste wood can be completed immediately. Our main focus is opening access, cleaning educational facilities and residents’ homes, and ensuring the environment is safe again,” Subhan quoted as saying.

He explained that in Aceh Tamiang Regency the cleaning of piles of wood in the Darul Mukhlisin Islamic Boarding School area involved hundreds of joint personnel from UPT Ministry of Forestry, TNI, Polri, BNPB, Ministry of PUPR, as well as partners.
As of Monday (22/12), cleaning progress at the location had reached around 30 percent.Work even continued until evening to speed up handling.
In addition, cleaning of the Men’s Dormitory on the 1st floor has reached around 50 percent, while other teams continue cleaning the Women’s Dormitory.The wood transfer is planned to begin on Tuesday (23/12) with a mechanism for pulling and transporting it to a temporary storage location that has been determined by the regional government.
Meanwhile in Stepan District, North Aceh Regency, the joint team focused its activities on opening road access to residential areas.To date, the access road that has been successfully opened is one kilometer long.Cleaning was also carried out at SD Negeri 12 steps to support the recovery of teaching and learning activities.
In North Sumatra, Head of the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) Novita Kusuma Wardani explained that the clean-up was carried out in the villages of Aek Ngadol, Garoga and Huta Godang.
The Ministry of Forestry team together with the TNI cleaned up piles of wood and mud in residents’ houses, the shoulders of cross-village roads and public facilities.To prevent further impacts, the team also created ditches to collect liquid mud so that rainwater does not return to residents’ houses that have been cleaned.
Novita added that cleaning activities will continue in stages according to the daily work plan in the field.
“We ensure that cross-sector synergies continue. The Ministry of Forestry is committed to being present in the field until environmental conditions and community activities completely recover,” he said.
The Ministry of Forestry stated that it would continue to synergize with all stakeholders in accelerating the handling of disaster impacts, in order to restore access, the environment and the lives of affected communities in Aceh and North Sumatra.
