Medan Mayor Rico Waas emphasized that humanitarian assistance was in the form of 30 tons of rice from Red Crescent
United Arab Emirates
(UAE) was not rejected, but instead diverted distribution through the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC).
Rico explained that this step was taken so that aid could be distributed directly by the donor to the institution they had appointed.
“The aid has been distributed to MDMC as an NGO appointed by Red Crescent UAE,” said Rico, Friday (20/12).

Rico added that the diversion of distribution was carried out as a form of caution as well as the regional government’s commitment to transparency in the management of aid, especially that from abroad.
“We reiterate that this aid was not rejected, but transferred to MDMC. This is part of efforts to ensure that aid management runs according to provisions,” said Rico.
MDMC representative, Irsan Armadi, said that the rice aid from Red Crescent UAE had been officially handed over on Wednesday (17/12).MDMC ensures that aid distribution will be carried out according to needs in the field and in coordination with related parties.
“We have received the assistance and will immediately distribute it, considering that there are still many Medan residents who need it,” explained Irsan.
Previously, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian said that the assistance in the form of 30 tons of rice for disaster victims received by the Medan City Government was not official assistance from the United Arab Emirates government, but from Red Crescent United Arab Emirates.
Tito said that initially the Medan City Government had received the rice assistance. However, they think that the aid comes directly from the United Arab Emirates government so the city government has not been able to take steps to use this aid.
“The Mayor thinks [aid] is from the government, or government to government for which there is no mechanism yet,” said Tito during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, East Jakarta, Friday (19/12)
Tito continued, the rice had been transferred to the Muhammadiyah Medical Center in Medan.Later, Muhammadiyah will distribute aid to disaster locations.
“This rice is now in the hands of Muhammadiyah and later Muhammadiyah will distribute it to the community,” explained Tito.
