Marsinah Labor Activist Officially Becomes National Hero

officially designated as
national hero
on Monday (10/11) today.
The procession to determine national heroes was held to coincide with National Heroes’ Day at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta today.
Marsinah’s family also attended the Presidential Palace to receive a title from the government.

The President’s Military Secretary stated that the designation of a national hero was determined based on Presidential Decree No. 116/TK of 2025 concerning the Awarding of the Title of National Hero.
Marsinah was declared a national hero along with the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, who at that time served as president when Marsinah was killed.
Apart from Marsinah and Suharto, eight other figures were also designated as national heroes.
Some of them are the 4th President of the Republic of Indonesia Abdurrahman Wahid alias Gus Dur and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chancellor of Padjadjaran University Mochtar Kusumaatmadja.
Marsinah was an activist and watch factory worker in the New Order era.He worked as a laborer in Sidoarjo, then was kidnapped and killed on May 8 1993 after being missing for three days.
Marsinah’s body was found in the forest with signs of severe torture.This case later became a record of the International Labor Organization (ILO), known as case 1773.
His name was first proposed as a national hero on Labor Day, May 1 2025.
At that time, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto supported the proposal to make Marsinah a national hero.
“I will support Marsinah to become a national hero,” said Prabowo.
