Malaysian football observer, Zulakbal Abd Karim, said that football development in Malaysia was still failing after
Malaysia U-16 national team
slaughtered by Croatia 0-11 in a recent test match.
According to Zulakbal, related parties must review the coaching program. The reason is, if the coaching is correct, Malaysia U-16 will not be slaughtered by opponents.
“This defeat shows the continuation of the failure of the U-16 national team from past to present under the guidance of the Spanish coach, Javier Jorda Ribera,” said Zulakbal, quoted from

“Despite bringing in a coach from Spain, the national team is considered to have failed miserably (losing 0-11). I think all parties need to review our national football development program,” added Zulakbal.
In Zulakbal’s eyes, this crushing defeat shows that Harimau Muda is not ready to face challenges in higher competition.
“Because if you want to say it’s bad, if we don’t know what the purpose of the preparation is, why are we going to Croatia? The trip there certainly requires a lot of money. We should only compete if we are really ready,” said Zulakbal.
“But when we lost badly 0-11, it clearly showed we weren’t ready. If we weren’t ready, why go there? So, in my opinion, if that’s the best line-up we have with a Spanish coach, then this program has indeed failed.”
Ahead of the 2026 U-17 Asian Cup Qualification in Vietnam at the end of November, Zulakbal hopes that management can focus on the mental preparation of the Malaysian U-16 players after being slaughtered by Croatia.
“If we lose 0-11 in a match, I think the players’ mentality will definitely be greatly affected. So, coaches and management need to refocus on strengthening their mentality because currently what is most worrying is the level of confidence and mentality of the players who are affected,” said Zulakbal.
