“Durian is not just an ordinary fruit. It is part of the nation’s identity,” DMA President Eric Chan was quoted as saying
The Straits Times.
“Every Malaysian has a story about durian, either from memories or traditions. This is something that unites us all,” he added.
Malaysian durian is famous internationally. This started from stalls at the morning market to boxes of durian sent abroad.
Variants such as Musang King (D197), Black Thorn (D200), and D24 are loved globally, placing Malaysia as a world-class durian center.
The Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation has just extended Musang King’s Geographical Indication (GI) status for 10 years until March 2034.
This confirms the durian’s position as a protected national product and prevents other countries from claiming that name.
“This GI extension is like a passport stamp for Musang King,” said Chan.
“It proves it comes from Malaysia, something we are proud of. It shows local farmers and producers have succeeded in creating a global brand from their own land.”
On September 8, the Director General of the Department of Agriculture, Nor Sam Alwi, confirmed that his agency had received the official DMA application through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
He explained that this determination requires in-depth study and coordination across government agencies.
“Various factors such as socio-economic impact, export value, cultural heritage, level of public acceptance, as well as the role of the fruit in the national agricultural industry will be considered.
The Ministry is now examining the proposal with the relevant agencies so that decisions are taken carefully and thoroughly.
“If the plan is approved, an official announcement will be made after obtaining government approval,” he concluded.
This durian story is also related to the lives of farmers and industry players.
“The durian industry provides millions of ringgit in agricultural export value and helps thousands of farmers, planters and derivative industry players,” said Chan.
He added that recognition of durian as a national fruit could encourage new things, research and development of agrotourism.
Malaysian business people are starting to experiment with various durian products such as frozen durian meat, coffee, cakes and candy.
If National Durian Day is declared, it will coincide with the peak of the durian harvest.Chan envisions festivals, garden tours, exhibitions and various events related to this fruit.
“That day will be a moment for all of us, garden workers and durian connoisseurs, to celebrate the special qualities of this fruit. And of course, to enjoy together,” he said.
