The statement came amid tensions between Japan and China.
“Recently, Takaichi’s statement about stability and peace in the Taiwan Strait really, really touched us. This statement reflects justice and peace,” Cho said in Taipei, as quoted
The Straits Times.
“We are also very grateful to Takaichi and the Japanese government and people for continuing to maintain these values of justice and peace despite great pressure.”
Previously, diplomatic tensions between Japan and China worsened after Takaichi’s statement in Parliament in November said a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
China considers Taiwan its own territory and has vowed to take over the region through various means, including military use.
Japan does not officially recognize Taiwan and only has diplomatic relations with Beijing. However, Taiwan, which was under Japanese rule from 1895-1945, still has close unofficial relations with Tokyo.
Takaichi’s statement also angered Beijing and accused him of taking Japan back towards militarism.
As a result, Chinese airlines canceled many flights and Japanese artists were also prevented from performing in China.
China’s pressure on Japan also made many Taiwanese people change their travel plans and choose to go to Japan.
“At the same time, we welcome Japanese performance groups and pop idols to perform in Taiwan. We will definitely fill the venue and give a warm welcome,” said Cho.
In November when the dispute occurred, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te announced an additional defense budget of US$40 billion (around Rp. 666 trillion) to deal with China’s threat.
“I hope Taiwan is safe, Japan is safe, and the world remains peaceful,” he said.
At the end of November, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said plans to deploy medium-range missiles at the Yonaguni base were progressing smoothly. The island is about 110 km east of Taiwan.
