He said that the construction of the IMIP airport was provided as a facility for investors who invested capital in downstream projects in Morowali.Luhut said many countries were doing the same thing.
“As is commonly done in countries such as Vietnam and Thailand. If they invest US$ 20 billion, it is normal for them to ask for certain facilities as long as they do not violate national regulations,” he explained.
Luhut said at that time, the special permit given to IMIP Airport was only to serve domestic flights.This means that it does not require customs or immigration according to statutory regulations.
“At that time, we never allowed the airports in Morowali or Weda Bay to become international airports,” he stressed.
In this explanation, Luhut also emphasized that he had never been involved in any business in order to maintain integrity and ensure that the nation’s interests were a priority.
“Therefore, if there are parties who accuse President Joko Widodo of making this decision unilaterally, I emphasize that full coordination was carried out by me,” he explained.
He also challenged all parties who doubted his decision to come to him and he was ready to take responsibility.Because the main goal is downstreaming, which currently has a very positive impact on Indonesia.
“I invite anyone to come to me with data if they want to question this decision. We are not siding with China or America, we are siding with Indonesia. In fact, at that time China was the only country ready to enter,” he concluded.
IMIP Airport is currently in the spotlight.This is the aftermath of a statement by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin who said that airports not being guarded by state officials were an anomaly.
This airport is different from Maleo Airport which was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on 23 December 2018, which is also in the Morowali area, Central Sulawesi.

This airport is used for domestic flights, and is managed by a private party with the supervision of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Transportation through the Makassar Region V Airport Authority.
IMIP Airport can serve special flights for international routes from August 2025. This is stated in the Decree of the Minister of Transportation Number KM 38 of 2025 concerning the Use of Airports that Can Serve Direct Flights from and/or to Abroad.
