A husband and wife were found dead after being trapped in a burning private sauna room.
Masanari Matsuda and his wife Yoko Matsuda were originally found lying on the floor of a room at Sauna Tiger, in the Akasaka district, Tokyo, Japan on Monday (15/12).
According to a Japan Times report, police found the fire alarm control panel in the facility’s operational office turned off. This indicates the possibility that the alarm buttons on all sauna units were not working at the time of the incident.

The couple is known to have booked a private sauna room for two hours at around 11am local time.
When found, the couple was on top of each other with their heads near the door. Both were rushed to hospital, but were later pronounced dead.
Police and firefighters received a report of a fire by an employee, after the fire alarm outside the sauna unit went off at 12.25pm.
Firefighters and police later discovered the room’s wooden doorknob had fallen off both sides of the door.A towel was burnt and a stool, including the backrest and seat inside the room, was found charred.
Tokyo police are investigating whether a broken doorknob found broken on the floor of the sauna room was the cause of the couple being trapped inside the room.
The sauna has expressed its condolences to the victim’s family and said it is taking the incident “very seriously.”
“We express our deepest condolences and our sincere sympathy for the deep sorrow and pain that cannot be expressed in words,” Sauna Tiger said in a statement.
The management stated that the facility would be closed temporarily to assist the fire department’s investigation.
The sauna has been operating since July 2022 and has several private rooms equipped with sauna units and bathrooms on floors two to four. The fire itself occurred on the third floor of the building.
