Aoun called on UN envoys to support the Lebanese army’s efforts to disarm ‘non-state’ groups, such as Hezbollah.Lebanon hopes to complete the first phase of the government-approved plan by the end of this year.
“The Lebanese army will play its full role. The international community must support and help it,” Aoun said.
He also emphasized that the Israeli side needed to cease fire and withdraw.Any outcome of negotiations between Lebanon and the UN, he continued, would depend on Israel’s position.
Aoun emphasized that the plan would continue. The reason is, the Lebanese people are tired of military confrontation.
The committee will hold a new round of talks involving civilians starting December 19.
Lebanon’s diplomatic efforts are supported by Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem. However, he called the inclusion of civilian representatives in talks with Israel a ‘misstep’.
“We consider this act as an additional guilt on top of the sin,” Qassem said.
In November 2024, there was actually a ceasefire that was supposed to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran. However, Israel continues to carry out attacks on Lebanon and maintains troops in five areas of southern Lebanon that it considers strategic.
