(PBNU) still continues today.In recent times, NU has been tense internally due to differences in attitudes and interpretations of the organization, leadership, PBNU policies, and even plans for holding a conference.
Apart from that, internal organizations also have different views regarding the removal of Yahya Cholil Staquf (Gus Yahya) from the general chairman of PBNU last November.A number of parties consider this dismissal to be inappropriate, but other parties consider this to be in accordance with organizational regulations.

Following are the latest facts about PBNU’s internal chaos:
1. Lirboyo’s ultimatum for forgiveness
The NU senior Kiai who held the Kubro Alim Ulama and NU Elders Conference conveyed an appeal to the PBNU management to carry out islah within 3×24 hours.
The ultimatum was delivered after the Kubro deliberation meeting at the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, Kediri, East Java, concluded on December 21.This means that the ultimatum deadline is Wednesday, December 24.
The deliberation wanted the resolution of the Rais Aam PBNU camp, KH Miftachul Akhyar and Gus Yahya, to be removed from the PBNU General Chair.
“In order to maintain the integrity of Jam’iyyah and restore the honor of Nahdlatul Ulama, Musyawarah Kubro asked Rais ‘Aam and the General Chairperson of PBNU to perform ishlah seriously, no later than 3 × 24 hours, starting from Sunday, December 21 2025 at 12.00 WIB,” said the spokesperson for the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, Kediri, East Java, KH Oing Abdul Muid or Gus Muid.
2. MLB option, if islah fails
If the agreement is not achieved within the deadline, Musyawarah Kubro requests that leadership authority be handed over to the PBNU Mustasyar ranks.
The forum is also preparing a final scenario if the mandate is not handed over to Mustasyar.If these conditions occur, the senior kiai agreed to encourage the holding of the Extraordinary Congress (MLB) through NU structural support in the regions.
3. Rais Aam’s response
Miftachul Akhyar respected the forum in Lirboyo because it was initiated by one of the PBNU Mustasyar, KH Anwar Manshur.He then emphasized that Gus Yahya’s dismissal was in accordance with organizational regulations.
“We certainly respect this cultural forum, because it started from the initiative of KH Anwar Manshur as one of the PBNU Mustasyar. However, organizational decisions must proceed according to Jam’iyah rules and mechanisms,” said Miftachul in an official statement, Tuesday (23/12).
“Everything must return to organizational mechanisms, because that is where the dignity of Jam’iyah Nahdlatul Ulama is maintained,” he added.
4. Syuriyah PBNU raises its voice
PBNU Katib Aam, Mohammad Nuh, said that his party respected the decisions of the ulama in the forum.
“The basic principle is, of course we respect anyone’s views, especially the views of some of the elders and so on,” said Nuh in the South Jakarta area, Monday (22/12)
However, he said that this view could be applied as long as it did not conflict with organizational mechanisms or rules.Nuh said that Syuriyah had discussed the recommendations resulting from the Kubro deliberation regarding the encouragement of islah.
He then highlighted the recommendations that would be submitted to Mustasyar PBNU.In fact, Mustasyar was appointed by Syuriyah or Rais Aam.
So, organizationally, Mustasyar cannot challenge the authority of the results of the Syuriyah meeting which appointed Zulfa Mustofa as Chairman of Tanfidziyah replacing Gus Yahya.
5. Gus Yahya joined in the conversation
Gus Yahya responded to Rais Aam Miftachul Akhyar’s statement explaining that his dismissal as general chairman of PBNU included his absence from the Kubro Deliberation in Lirboyo.
The statement was contained in a letter entitled Tabayyun Rais Aam PBNU: Placing the Dismissal of the General Chair in the Corridor of the Jami’iyah Constitution.
Responding to this statement, Yahya said that the incident and the letters had a unified context and could not be separated.
According to him, if you look at and understand the entire context completely and honestly, it will appear that the decision of the Syuriyah Daily Meeting on November 20 to ask him to stop was baseless.
“The daily Syuriyah meeting at the Aston Hotel on 20 November 2025 and all its derivative decisions, up to the claim of appointing the General Chairperson, are actions that have no basis, even contradict the Articles of Association and Bylaws (AD/ART), and are automatically null and void,” said Yahya at the PBNU Office, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (24/12).
