The toy was created by Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist with strong ties to the Netherlands, where he moved as a child, developing an appreciation for folklore that inspired The Monsters series, which later resulted in Labubu.
It took several years for the monster doll with pointy ears and sharp teeth to become popular until it finally went global recently.
One factor was that Pop Mart sold the dolls through blind boxes, meaning buyers never knew what they were getting until they opened the packaging, which then also fueled demand.
It’s also created a red-hot secondary market, where collectors pay exorbitant amounts to get the dolls they want online, at pop-up sales, and in brick-and-mortar stores.
Not only that, limited edition Labubu and auctions have resulted in prices of items reaching six figures.
The second factor is the adoption of these toys by certain celebrities, especially BLACKPINK’s Lisa, who in 2024 uses them as accessories.
These toys first became a sensation in the Southeast Asian market before taking the rest of the world by storm.Pop Mart’s profits will reportedly jump 350 percent by early 2025.
Labubu is the name of the main monster doll in this line, which features leader Zimomo, companion Mokoko, and boyfriend Tycoco as characters, among others.
As Hollywood looks for new forms of IP to exploit, they are increasingly turning to toys and games.Warner Bros.and Mattel had success with Barbie, and Warner Bros.then making A Minecraft Movie one of the biggest blockbuster films of 2025.
There have also been successful films based on games, such as Super Mario Bros.and Sonic the Hedgehog.Currently, studios are working on producing films based on everything from Masters of the Universe to Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, which Vin Diesel wrote.
