By default, Mamdani’s chances of winning the New York mayoral election are slim.Because the 34-year-old Democrat Party politician was not a “big star” or party champion at the start of his candidacy.
“Not long ago, New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani was just a young legislator sitting on the backbenches (unnoticed); and running on a supposedly impossible run for mayor of New York City. But as time went by, his campaign gained momentum, gathering thousands of volunteers, hitting donation ceilings, and steadily climbing in the polls until finally winning the Democratic Party primary last June,” the report read.

Zohran’s campaign funds raised up to US$8.4 million (Rp. 140 billion). The funds were collected from the community and donors who sided with Mamdani.Listed are the names of a number of donors, including entrepreneurs Elizabeth Simons and Tom Preston-Werner.
Elizabeth Simons is the daughter of billionaire Jim Simons who died in 2024. She donated US$250 thousand (Rp. 4.1 billion) last August.
Meanwhile, Tom Preston-Werner donated $20,000 last April.Tom was the co-founder of GitHub which was acquired by Microsoft for US$7.5 billion.
Apart from entrepreneurs, Mamdani also obtains volunteer funds from the community.Since the start of the campaign he has raised US$624,339 (Rp. 10 billion) from 6,502 donors.
This fund then continued to increase to $845,000 from 16 thousand donors. As of last June, it had recorded US$1.7 million. The large number of residents who became donors shows that Mamdani is supported by the majority of the community.
This is different from his competitor, Andrew Cuomo, who received funding from businessmen who support President Donald Trump and supporters of the Republican Party. For example, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg alone donated US$5 million, according to the site politico.
Plus Cuomo raised nearly $3.9 million and, with public matching funds, has $5.7 million on hand, according to the latest filing last month.
Campaign documents from late May revealed that the former governor received more than $270,000 from 167 Republican donors between March 14 and May 19.
In the previous filing period, it was recorded that he raised more than US$120,000 from Republican and Conservative Party donors.
