KPop Demon Hunters
was officially named TIME magazine’s Breakthrough of the Year this year, recognizing the film’s extraordinary global impact.TIME announced this on Tuesday (9/12).
Just like other categories, the announcement of Breakthrough of the Year was followed by a special cover illustration with the three HUNTR/X members, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, as the main characters of the film.

“KPop Demon Hunters’ influence will likely also be felt in the wider entertainment industry,” the magazine wrote of the film’s success.
“One big-budget, female-focused action film that topped the box office proves that betting on other films is safe.”
TIME also wrote about the impact of KPop Demon Hunters among celebrities and the public since the film was released on Netflix in June 2025 and ended in limited screening in several North American cinemas.

They gave examples from Andy Samberg to Kelly Clarkson who expressed their love for the film, then Fortnite started allowing players to buy Demon Hunters “skins” for their characters.
There was also Novak Djokovic who danced to the song Soda Pop by Saja Boys after winning his quarterfinal match at the U.S. Championships.Open.
Until, childcare expert, Dr.Becky Kennedy, created a guide to watching the film with kids and promoted it to her millions of Instagram followers.
“The stars also appeared on The Tonight Show and in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as making a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, in a sketch where Bad Bunny scolds his friends for failing to understand the genius of the film.”
They also highlighted the wider impact, such as the five most searched Halloween costumes on Google were all characters from the film.
This and the crowning of Breakthrough of the Year made KPop Demon Hunters solidify its position as one of the main forces in pop culture after six months of release.
One of the songs, Golden, topped the charts – and has become a favorite among artists to cover and is now officially nominated for international awards, such as the 2026 Golden Globes.
Now, stars and fans are just waiting for KPop Demon Hunters to be nominated for the 2026 Oscars or not.
Meanwhile, the KPop Demon Hunters sequel is rumored to be released in 2029.
