KPop Demon Hunters
one step closer to another golden moment, namely
Oscars
.Netflix’s phenomenal project this year was among 35 films eligible for the animated film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of all films eligible for the animation, documentary and international film awards at next year’s Oscars on Friday (21/11).

Although KPop Demon Hunters initially aired and was successful on Netflix, the film also received screening qualifications in cinemas in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco in June 2025.
The screening made KPop Demon Hunters meet the film academy’s requirements for an Oscar nomination.However, screenings in UK cinemas were not enough to qualify the film for a BAFTA nomination.
Apart from KPop Demon Hunters, several animated films that are eligible to be nominated are Arco, Elio, Zootopia 2, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, and In Your Dreams.

The two anime that qualify are Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.
One thing to note is that the Chinese blockbuster that broke so many box office records, Ne Zha 2 is not even among the 35 titles listed.
Likewise, Paddington in Peru and Smurfs were either not submitted or did not meet the requirements, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday (21/11).
KPop Demon Hunters, which Netflix says is the most-watched film of all time, has been watched more than 541 million hours worldwide.
The film also had the highest ranking soundtrack in 2025 with eight of its songs making it to the Billboard Hot 100.
KPop Demon Hunters also hit theaters in August with an estimated earnings of around US$18 million (which would have topped the charts if Netflix had released theatrical earnings) and was released on Halloween weekend.
Netflix previously won its first animated film Oscar at the 2022 Oscars for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
Fans of KPop Demon Hunters, Demon Slayer, and Chainsaw Man will have to wait until the nomination announcement on January 22, 2026 to find out their favorite films make the cut for animated film.
The 2026 Oscars or the 98th Academy Awards will be broadcast live on March 15 or March 16 WIB.
