“We
concerns
with illegal mines, especially gold mines, and in Indonesia there are many.”We were surprised that there were also some in the area around Komodo National Park, on Sebayur Besar Island, adjacent to Komodo National Park,” said Dian in Labuan Bajo, Friday (28/11).
Dian inspected the location after receiving complaints about illegal mining activities. He showed a drone that recorded mining activities in the area.
According to Dian, the mining location is not far from the beach. The distance is only about 15-20 minutes on foot from the beach.
Dian said her presence at the mining site was to ensure that no one protected illegal mining activities in the conservation area.
“Why is the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) looking into it? Don’t let it happen, don’t let there be backing, the term off-road bribery is bribery, yes, behind that, of course there is money, right, to state officials or individuals, especially since this could have an impact on the sustainability of tourism in Labuan Bajo,” he said.
Dian emphasized that mining must be stopped because it has an impact on the environment and tourism in Labuan Bajo. The waters of Sebayur Besar Island are one of the favorite spots for tourists for snorkeling and diving. This island is also not far from Labuan Bajo, only about 20 minutes away by speedboat.
“I’m worried about the environmental impact. Komodo is the only one in the world, don’t let it (mining) become illegal, there is backing, the environment is damaged, tourism is damaged. Our hope is that this must stop,” he said.
Dian warned of the potential for pollution from the use of dangerous chemicals in the gold mining process.
“It’s flowing here, you can imagine if it’s still there, if there’s a gold mine, that means there’s mercury, but there’s cyanide flowing to Komodo Island next door. The Komodo dragons are very dangerous, they’re all victims of this mercury and humans too,” said Dian.
“Because West Manggarai is super premium, of course we have to maintain sustainability,” he added
The Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) has conveyed these findings to a number of authorities such as the Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and local regents for follow-up.
