Kim praised the regiment’s performance during its 120-day overseas deployment, which began in early August 2025. Their duties involved combat and engineering duties, including mine clearance in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces infiltrated and occupied the region for months before withdrawing.
“You were able to perform the miracle of turning a vast danger zone into a safe and secure zone in less than three months, a task that was believed to be impossible even in a few years,” Kim said, according to the South Korean news agency,
Yonhap
.
“The armed criminals of the West, although armed with the latest military hardware, cannot match this revolutionary army of unfathomable spiritual depth,” Kim added at the ceremony held Friday (12/12).
The North Korean leader also spoke about the “heartbreaking loss” of nine members of his country’s army regiment and announced that the unit would be awarded the Order of Freedom and Independence.
According to KCNA, the fallen soldiers will also be awarded the title of Hero of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the official name for North Korea.

Last month, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that North Korean troops, who helped Russia repel Ukraine’s offensive on Kursk, were now involved in mine clearance in the area.
Closing a key meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea on Thursday, Kim also praised North Korea’s deployment of troops to support Russia’s war in Ukraine, saying it “demonstrates to the world the prestige of our army.”
Kim talked about his country’s army always winning and claimed North Korea was the “true protector of international justice.”
Under a joint defense pact between Moscow and Pyongyang, an estimated 14,000 North Korean troops were deployed to fight for Russia, with the number of dead or wounded ranging from 3,000 to 4,000.
The welcoming ceremony held on Friday (12/12) was the latest public event to honor North Korean soldiers who served in Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Previously, in October, Kim was seen embracing weeping soldiers at a groundbreaking ceremony for a planned memorial to those who fought for Russia.
In June, North Korean state media showed Kim covering coffins with national flags in what appeared to be a repatriation of soldiers’ remains from Russia.
