The senior clerics of Nahdlatul Ulama who are members of the Kubro Alim Ulama and NU Elders Conference issued a firm statement addressed to the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (
PBNU
).They urged that an islah be carried out immediately to end the internal conflict, or that the PBNU leadership be asked to restore its mandate.
The Kubro deliberation took place on Sunday (21/12) at the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, Kediri, East Java.This forum was attended by hundreds of kiai, masyayikh, and NU administrators from various regions in Indonesia, both offline and online.It was recorded that 601 participants participated in person, while 546 others attended online, representing a total of 308 PWNU and PCNU.
Spokesperson for the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, KH Oing Abdul Muid or Gus Muid, said that the forum expressed deep concern over PBNU’s internal conflict which was considered increasingly sharp and never resolved.Ilah efforts that had previously been taken through various community forums and NU elders, including meetings at the Al-Falah Ploso Islamic Boarding School in Kediri and the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in Jombang, were said to have not produced results.

According to the senior kiai, this prolonged conflict has had a serious impact, not only on the internal solidity of the organization, but also on the trust of the people and the public in NU as a jam’iyyah diniyah ijtima’iyah.This condition is considered to be eroding the dignity and authority of the organization, so it cannot be allowed to continue.
“Musyawarah Kubro views that the prolonged internal PBNU conflict has undermined the dignity and authority of Jam’iyyah Nahdlatul Ulama, and has significantly eroded the trust of the people and the public in NU,” said Gus Muid.
On that basis, the Kubro Conference firmly asked Rais ‘Aam PBNU KH Miftachul Akhyar and General Chairperson of PBNU KH Yahya Cholil Staquf to immediately carry out the islah seriously.The deadline given is 3×24 hours.
“In order to maintain the integrity of Jam’iyyah and restore the honor of Nahdlatul Ulama, Musyawarah Kubro asked Rais ‘Aam and the General Chairperson of PBNU to carry out islah seriously, no later than within 3×24 hours, starting from Sunday, December 21 2025 at 12.00 WIB,” he said.
If this deadline is not achieved, the forum requests that leadership authority be handed over to the PBNU Mustasyar ranks.This step is seen as a constitutional mechanism to maintain the continuity and integrity of the organization, as well as preparing for the 2026 NU Congress.
The Kubro deliberation also prepared further options if the leadership mandate was not handed over to Mustasyar.In this scenario, the senior kiai agreed to encourage the holding of the Extraordinary Congress (MLB) by mobilizing NU structural support in the regions, with the condition of 50 percent support plus one PWNU and PCNU.
“If the agreement cannot be implemented, Musyawarah Kubro asks both parties to hand over authority and trust to Mustasyar PBNU to organize the 2026 Nahdlatul Ulama Congress,” he said.
The MLB is planned to be held no later than before the departure of the first group of Hajj pilgrims in 2026. The MLB committee will be composed of PWNU and PCNU elements, involving internal NU elements deemed necessary.
Closing his statement, Gus Muid hopes that Nahdlatul Ulama will always receive protection, guidance and help from Allah SWT so that its integrity remains intact.
A number of elderly kiai figures also attended the forum, including KH Anwar Manshur, KH Nurul Huda Djazuli, KH Ma’ruf Amin, KH Said Aqil Sirodj, KH Muhammad Nuh Addawami, and KH Zaki Mubarok.Also present were PBNU Syuriyah and Tanfidziyah officials, leaders of central level autonomous institutions and bodies, Islamic boarding school administrators, as well as PWNU and PCNU representatives from all over Indonesia.
