The bill approved on Wednesday (12/11) is similar to laws in several countries such as Russia, Georgia and Hungary. The bill will now be submitted to Kazakhstan’s senate, and has a good chance of passing.
“Children and teenagers receive online information every day that can negatively influence their thoughts about family, morality and the future,” Kazakh Education Minister Gani Beisembayev said in support of the bill, quoted
The Straits Times
.
Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev must sign the bill for it to pass, and he has repeatedly emphasized the importance of preserving “traditional values.”
MPs, now controlled by parties supporting Tokayev, agreed to support implementing the ban.
But several human rights organizations previously warned against passing the law.
One of the human rights observer organizations that opposes this is the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR) based in Belgium.IPHR said the move “clearly violates Kazakhstan’s commitments to international human rights.”
Kazakhstan is a country with a Muslim majority but no religious basis and has permitted homosexuality since the 1990s, although its citizens’ views remain conservative.
